Old trees are important for their holes and cavities, which supply both nesting and roosting sites for many species in Eastern Ontario including Eastern Screech-Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Great Crested Flycatcher and various species of woodpeckers.
The colour and pattern of birds' feathers are very important for survival. The gray morph Eastern Screech-Owl has chosen a hole in gray tree trunk to blend into the surroundings.

Good birding,
Bruce
