The Ottawa-Gatineau districts first ever Cave Swallow was discovered along the Ottawa River off Bate Island at the Champlain Bridge during the morning on November 3, 2012. Two swallows were observed feeding off the south east corner of Bate Island over the channel by Ian Davidson and others. Due to the distance a positive ID wasn't possible. Ian phoned me and I was there in minutes. With a scope we identified the swallows, 1 Cave and 1 Cliff. The birds were enjoyed by many who where able to make it down. Below is a series of Cave Swallow photos. More later!
Hi Everyone
Lots of bird activity along the Ottawa River yesterday, November
3rd. During a hour period, 9:00-10:00am a group of us birding at Dick Bell Park
recorded 14 Red-throated Loon, 6 Common Loon, 60+ Long-tailed Duck, 4 Golden
Eagle, and 1 Peregrine Falcon. All the birds were migrating south except for the
flock of Long-tailed Ducks which stayed on the river. Good birding, Bruce
Directions: Dick Bell Park is located along Carling Ave. just west of Holly Acres Road and Andrew Haydon Park.
