September 7, 2011 Parasitic Jaeger and 26 Great Egrets at Shirley's Bay!
The birding along the Ottawa River continues to improve. Today at Shirley's Bay I observed a juvenile Parasitic Jaeger resting on the water approximately 200 meters off the causeway. The jaeger spent most of its time floating but did harass a couple of Ring-billed Gulls. The Parasitic Jaeger is a very rare fall visitor to the Ottawa district. This is the second individual I've observed this fall in Ottawa. Another surprise at Shirley's Bay was a group of 26 Great Egrets feeding in the back bay along with 20+ Great Blue Herons. Last year around this date, we had 33 Great Egrets roosting at Shirley's Bay.
