January 6-8, 2010 Drive by Birding to South Carolina

I've been on the road the past few days heading to South Carolina for a Wedding. The drive by birding (DBB) has been good with a number of interesting species. In north west Virginia had a number of both Turkey and Black Vultures soaring over highway. Lots of the usual land birds along the way including Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, Northern Mockingbird, Tufted Titmouse and hundreds of American Robins. However what seemed to be unusual was the number of of dead owls along the way, including 2 Great Horned,2 Eastern Screech, 1 Long-eared, and 2 Northern Saw-whet Owls. Also,3 Red-tailed, 1 Red-shouldered and 1 Cooper's Hawk were observed dead along the road.

The Northern Mockingbird is a common sight in Duncan , South Carolina.
