Pelee Birding October 2, 2009

The weather at Pelee was very challenging today with rain, sometimes heavy, and very strong winds! Finally by early afternoon the sun came out but the winds remained strong. The birding was again slow but steady with a number of species including White-crowned Sparrow, Carolina Wren, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart, numerous Yellow-rumped Warbler and Golden-crowned Kinglet. The highlight was a concentration of 40+ Monarch Butterflies resting on a tree branch near the point. We observed a few 100 during our walk along East Beach. Hopefully better weather for today!

The Monarch Butterfly has declined or the past few years.

The Sanderling is a regular migrant in the park.

Also known as the " wave runner"the Sanderling is a common sight along sandy beaches in Ontario and further south.
