Birding Renfrew County:Westmeath Provincial Park and Lake Dore September 30, 2009
Despite the strong winds, cool temperatures and occasional rain our trip up into Renfrew County was good. Enroute we stopped at Muskrat Lake and viewed a few puddle ducks including American Black Duck, Wood Duck and Mallard. At the boat launch there was a large flock of 150+ Ring-billed Gull resting and a few distanct Bonaparte's Gull were sighted. At Westmeath Provincial Park the strong winds made it difficult for any small bird but we managed to see a few American Pipit, Swamp Sparrow and 2 Lapland Longspur along the shoreline. Overhead an immature Bald Eagle soared over and a few Turkey Vultures went sailing by. The rough water/white caps made it difficult or almost impossible to see any water birds. Late morning we checked Morrison Island and observed another Bald Eagle, this time an adult and a small number of Common Mergansers resting on the exposed rocks near the bridge. Our final stop of the day was at Lake Dore, conditions had improved and the winds were lighter. There was a small collection of 27 Common Loon, 9 Red-necked Grebe, 23 Horned Grebe, 1 Double-crested Cormorant, 1 Lesser Scaup and 50+ Bonaparte's Gull.
