August 31, 2012, 2012 Dusk at Deschenes Rapids

I spent around an hour towards dusk birding at Deschenes Rapids. With the continued low water levels the conditions were great for gulls and other waders to congregate on the exposed roosts at the rapids. There were a couple of 1000 Ring-billed Gull, 100+ Herring Gull resting on the rocks or water, 85 Great Black-backed Gull, 1 3rd year Lesser Black-backed Gull, 9 Caspian Tern, and 125+ Double-crested Cormorant. I also counted 26 Great Egrets that came into roost on Conroy Island, the location that provided the first breeding record for the Ottawa-Gatineau district this summer.
