August 12, 2012 Birding from Andrew Haydon Park to Britannia Point

Late this afternoon Ben and I decided to do a quick check along the river between Andrew Haydon Park and Britannia Point. With thunder storms passing through the valley we were hoping for another grounding of shorebirds. At Andrew Haydon Park (Ottawa Beach ) we observed another very tame Red-necked Phalarope and the only other shorebird were 2 Killdeer. No fallout this time. At Deschenes Rapids there was lots of activity including 9 Caspian Tern, 32 Common Tern, 17 adult Great Black-backed Gull, 35+ juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron, 12 Great Egret including 2 nests still with 4 almost fledged young. The young spent a lot of time exercising there wings. Our only shorebirds were 1 Whimbrel flying over calling, 2 Sanderling and 20+ Spotted Sandpiper. The number of juvenile Herring Gulls is on the rise with 23 roosting on the exposed rocks this evening.

A juvenile Red-necked Phalarope feeding. This individual was amazingly tame as you can see by the next 3 photos.
