Both "Rail and Bittern" outings were successful! We had a very cooperative American Bittern that we were able to watch calling and a few Virginia Rails that put on a great display. The mosquitoes are now out in full force!
The American Bittern is easy to overlook in a cattail marsh but its distinctive call is a give away. We were close enough to hear the deep gulping "pump-er-lunk" call. American Bittern blending into the dry cattails. A Virginia Rail comes out of its cattail cover. Good birding,
Bruce
